Four Man City players to miss out on Premier League winners’ medals despite playing this season

Despite being active for Manchester City this season, four players will not attend the Premier League champions’ medal ceremony.

Following a victory over West Ham on the final day of the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City made history by becoming the first English team to win the title four times in a row. The game saw England’s Phil Foden scoring a goal in the second minute, calming the anxieties of City supporters, and adding a second just before halftime. Mohammed Kudus managed to score a stunning bicycle kick to draw one back for West Ham, but Rodri’s powerful drive in the second half ultimately secured the victory for City.

As a result of this triumph, Manchester City will receive Premier League champions’ medals. The league will distribute 40 medals to the players, coaching staff, and manager Pep Guardiola. According to current regulations, every player who has made five or more Premier League appearances this season will earn one of these medals.

This season, 21 City players have participated in the Premier League, meaning that the remaining 19 medals can be distributed among the coaches and other members of the team. While teams can petition the Premier League for additional medals, this will only be granted if 39 or more players have played in five or more games.

However, despite contributing to Manchester City’s success this season, four players will not receive medals, likely due to a technicality. Two of these four players left the club on permanent transfers, meaning they are no longer with the team.

Cole Palmer, now a standout player for Chelsea who led the Blues with 22 goals and 10 assists in the league this year, did play in one match for Manchester City this season. He came on as a substitute for ten minutes in City’s 3-0 victory over Burnley on opening day. Aymeric Laporte, a center-back, made his final appearance for City in that match before transferring to Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League later that month.

James McAtee, who is currently on loan to Sheffield United, and Kalvin Phillips, on loan to West Ham, both made four appearances each but do not meet the formal requirement of five appearances to be eligible for a medal.

As mentioned earlier, Manchester City has the option to distribute medals to these four players if they choose to do so. However, considering their extensive backroom staff, this might mean sacrificing a medal intended for another player or staff member.

This situation highlights the complexities and formalities involved in awarding championship medals, demonstrating that even significant contributions to a team’s success do not always align with the strict criteria set by the league. Manchester City’s decision on whether to award medals to these players will reflect how the club values their contributions despite the technicalities.
