Two more players are set to miss out on England’s final 26-man squad for Euro 2024. Ahead of this summer’s tournament, Gareth Southgate initially selected a 33-man provisional squad, from which seven players will be cut when the final team is announced.
It was revealed on Wednesday night that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison will not be part of the England squad for Euro 2024. This decision follows much speculation regarding the final roster. Maddison, 27, participated in England’s 3-0 friendly victory over Bosnia and featured in 28 Premier League matches last season under Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou. Despite his contributions, Maddison will not be heading to Germany with the final group.
Maddison had previously been included in England’s squad for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, although he did not play any minutes during the competition. His exclusion from the Euro 2024 squad marks another setback in his international career.
In addition to Maddison, Curtis Jones is reportedly another player set to miss out on the final squad. According to recent reports, Southgate has already informed Jones, who played in 36 matches across all competitions for Liverpool last season, that he will not be included in the summer squad.
Furthermore, The Daily Mail has reported that Jarell Quansah, another Liverpool player, is also “likely” to be left out of the final team. Quansah, 25, has made a name for himself at Liverpool as one of the premier full-backs in world football. Despite his impressive performances, Southgate has suggested that Quansah might not make the final cut.
Southgate expressed his satisfaction with Quansah’s development following the friendly against Bosnia. “We were really thrilled,” Southgate commented. “Since I first discussed the position with him about a year ago, he has shown great eagerness to learn and continues to develop in the role. Additionally, what we have seen over the last 30 minutes is a significant option for us.”
Southgate also emphasized the importance of having various strategies to handle the different challenges that teams will present during the tournament. “We will face different difficulties in this tournament, and we must have various methods to address the problems that teams pose to us,” he added.
As the final squad announcement approaches, the decisions on which players to drop from the provisional team are crucial. These choices reflect Southgate’s strategic planning and the need to balance the squad with players who can adapt to various situations during the competition. The exclusion of players like Maddison and potentially Jones and Quansah underscores the depth of talent available to England and the tough decisions that must be made to finalize the roster for Euro 2024.
