LIVERPOOL “I can’t keep pretending everything is fine. I can’t stay here after Jurgen Klopp’s departure; I need to move on,” declared an ‘exceptional’ Liverpool player, currently not in first-team training under Arne Slot and expected to exit the club.

Arne Slot has been immersing himself with his Liverpool squad over the past two weeks of training. A notable number of essential players remain absent due to their participation in international competitions over the summer, but Slot has still had the chance to assess some of the squad’s less prominent members.

One player who has particularly caught Slot’s attention is Sepp van den Berg. Meanwhile, Curtis Jones has praised the return of Kaide Gordon to first-team training, highlighting the young player’s potential.

As Slot begins to narrow down the squad for their upcoming tour to America, his preferences regarding player selection are becoming more evident.

Rhys Williams has notably been excluded from first-team training sessions.

The transition from Jurgen Klopp to Slot could prove beneficial for certain players who might find increased playing time at Anfield under the new management. Sepp van den Berg is a prime example of this potential shift. Nevertheless, other players also have the chance to capitalize on this new opportunity.

Despite Fabio Carvalho being on the verge of leaving the club, he still has an opportunity to impress Slot and possibly secure a place in the squad.

On the other hand, the continuity of Klopp’s familiar environment might signify the end for some players at Liverpool, especially center-backs like Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams.

Both Phillips and Williams are fondly remembered by fans for their crucial roles during the injury-ridden 2020/21 season. Klopp had previously commended Williams as “exceptional” for his contributions to securing a third-place finish for Liverpool, with Phillips also being a popular figure among the supporters.

However, according to the Liverpool ECHO, this summer seems to herald the final chapter for both players at the club.

Despite the club having already turned down a bid for Phillips, Williams’ situation appears more precarious. The 23-year-old has reportedly been absent from first-team training during the pre-season.

As pre-season continues, Slot’s squad preferences will become clearer. For many players, particularly those emerging from the academy, there is still time to demonstrate their worth to the new coach. However, for Williams, it appears that his opportunities have diminished significantly. At 23, he seems to need a fresh start elsewhere.

Williams, who has been with Liverpool since his youth, faces a tough departure. Prolonged stays at a club without regular playtime can hinder a player’s career development.

Williams has endured challenging loan spells at clubs such as Swansea, Blackpool, Aberdeen, and Port Vale. He needs to find a stable environment where he can rediscover the form that once earned him 19 appearances for Liverpool.

As Slot’s evaluation of his squad progresses, the fates of players like Williams will become increasingly apparent. For now, the focus is on those who can make a positive impression and secure their places under the new regime, while others, like Williams, might have to seek new opportunities to revive their careers.
