Pep Guardiola expresses his willingness to pay £200 million for a top Liverpool player, and it’s not Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool’s transfer activity this summer has been relatively quiet, but as the window nears its end, things appear to be heating up, particularly in terms of potential departures. One of the most notable rumors involves Luis Diaz, with growing speculation that he could be on the move.

According to a report by Pipe Sierra on X (formerly Twitter), Barcelona has shown a renewed and serious interest in signing Luis Diaz. The Catalan club reportedly rekindled their interest last week and is actively exploring ways to make an offer. However, given their current financial constraints, Barcelona is considering various forms of “financial engineering” to pull off the deal.

Luis Diaz’s current contract with Liverpool runs until 2027, and while there have been discussions about extending it, nothing definitive has been agreed upon. This uncertainty might open the door for a potential departure, especially if Barcelona can find a way to meet Liverpool’s valuation.

Interestingly, Manchester City has also been linked with a possible move for Diaz in the past. However, should the Colombian winger leave Anfield, a transfer to Barcelona might be more acceptable to Liverpool fans compared to a switch to a Premier League rival.

Diaz has been a key player for Liverpool, evident in his performance during the team’s final pre-season friendly, where he scored twice. His importance to the squad this season cannot be overstated, making the possibility of his departure surprising and, to some, concerning.

However, Liverpool’s left-wing position is one of depth, with players like Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez available to step in if Diaz were to leave. This depth might give Liverpool’s management, including Arne Slot, confidence that they can still be competitive even without Diaz.

Selling Diaz could also provide Liverpool with much-needed funds, either to bring in a like-for-like replacement or to strengthen other areas of the squad, particularly on the right wing, where Mo Salah remains the only natural choice.

Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether Barcelona can muster the financial resources required to tempt Liverpool into selling Diaz. The Catalan club has faced significant financial challenges in recent years, and whether they can afford Diaz’s transfer fee is a big question mark.

As the transfer window edges closer to its deadline, the likelihood of Liverpool finding a suitable replacement for Diaz diminishes, making the decision to sell him even more complex. Whether Barcelona’s interest materializes into a concrete offer and if Liverpool is willing to part ways with such a pivotal player remains to be seen in these final days of the transfer window.
