“Jose Mourinho warns that Mikel Arteta is repeating a mistake seen in preseason, predicting it could soon cost him his job and Arsenal the title.”

The opening match of the Premier League season brought with it a narrative that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta likely hoped to avoid. Amid the ongoing discussions surrounding Arsenal’s transfer activity and attacking options, the spotlight was inevitably intense. However, for Kai Havertz, the scrutiny was perhaps even more pronounced than for his teammates.

Arsenal has made only one senior addition so far this transfer window, signing Riccardo Calafiori. This has led to increasing frustration among fans, who are clamoring for more reinforcements as the transfer window nears its end. The pressure to bring in new players has mounted, especially with less than two weeks remaining to finalize any deals.

In response to the growing doubts, Havertz delivered an impressive performance in Arsenal’s opening match, silencing some of his critics with a crucial first-half goal. His goal, a powerful header from a well-placed cross by Bukayo Saka, was a textbook example of a center forward’s finish. It showcased Havertz’s ability to deliver in high-pressure situations and demonstrated why he remains an integral part of Arteta’s plans. Havertz didn’t just stop at the goal; he continued to be a menace for Wolverhampton Wanderers throughout the match.

Even after being brought down twice in the penalty area—both times with the referee ignoring the appeals—Havertz remained a constant threat. He dominated aerial duels and linked up effectively with his teammates, further proving his value. His involvement in the game didn’t wane as he played a key role in Arsenal’s second goal during the final minutes of the match.

While Bukayo Saka deserves the bulk of the credit for the second goal, cutting inside from the right before unleashing a trademark left-footed shot past Wolves’ goalkeeper Jose Sa, Havertz’s contribution cannot be overlooked. His intelligent movement, awareness of the game, and sharp execution were vital in helping Arsenal control the match and secure the victory.

This performance by Havertz may not entirely quell the ongoing debates about Arsenal’s need for a new striker. However, it gives Arteta solid ground when addressing questions about the club’s current attacking options. With the transfer market not brimming with obvious striker choices and the most mentioned targets, Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen, both commanding substantial fees, Arsenal might need to reconsider their strategy. Importantly, neither of these options would necessarily replace Havertz in the starting lineup at this point.

Given the current situation, it may be more strategic for Arsenal to focus their remaining transfer budget on bolstering their wide positions. During the match, Saka had to be substituted after taking several knocks, including one that left him clutching his knee. Although the substitution wasn’t due to a serious injury, it highlighted the need for depth in the wing positions. Leandro Trossard was brought in from the bench, but with Reiss Nelson being the only other natural winger available—and rumors circulating about his potential exit—reinforcing the wide areas should be a priority.

This scenario supports the argument that it might be wiser for Arsenal to delay spending big on a new striker for another six to twelve months, unless Havertz has already demonstrated that he is the solution Arsenal has been seeking.
