Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has acknowledged that he was tempted by the interest shown by Saudi Pro League clubs, but he has affirmed his commitment to staying with Liverpool and is even considering signing a new contract with the club. Recognized as one of the Premier League’s elite goalkeepers, Alisson has been instrumental in Liverpool’s success since joining from Roma in 2018, having won the Premier League, the Champions League, and several other trophies during his time at Anfield.
Earlier this year, in May, there were reports suggesting that Saudi Arabian clubs were targeting the 31-year-old Brazilian, along with Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, as key transfer targets for the summer. Alisson has now revealed that although he was tempted by a potentially lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, he ultimately chose to remain with Liverpool. He is eager to continue playing under the leadership of Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, and is committed to honoring his contract with the club.
In an interview with *The Times*, Alisson confirmed that there was indeed interest from Saudi clubs, but he made it clear that his primary focus is on fulfilling his contract with Liverpool, and he is even open to the possibility of extending it. “Yes, they had interest,” Alisson admitted, but added, “I want to honor my contract and finish my contract here or make a new one. I am really happy here. My family is happy.”
Alisson acknowledged that the financial offers from Saudi clubs were undeniably attractive, but he clarified that he never engaged in any detailed negotiations with them. He confessed that hearing about the staggering sums other players were being offered naturally piqued his curiosity. “When you hear about the numbers other players are getting, you are naturally a bit intrigued,” he said.
Despite the allure of the financial rewards, Alisson emphasized that his passion for football and his loyalty to Liverpool outweighed any monetary considerations. He stressed that while financial aspects are part of the sport, his priority remains his love for the game and his commitment to Liverpool. “You play football for love, it’s what you enjoy doing, but it’s also our profession, and we want to make the most of our careers. I’m open to that personally, but not now. Now is not the time,” he explained.
While he remains committed to Liverpool, Alisson mentioned that he would be open to discussions in the future if the club decides to entertain offers for him. “As long as I’m under contract here, my focus is on Liverpool. If the club wants to negotiate [to sell] me, then that’s a different conversation,” he noted.
Ultimately, Alisson’s decision to stay at Liverpool was influenced by his enthusiasm for the new chapter at the club under Slot’s leadership. He expressed his excitement about the fresh start and the potential achievements the team could reach this season. “When the Saudi interest came, I couldn’t ignore it without thinking. But my decision was always to stay and focus on what we can achieve in this new beginning, and I’m really excited about that. We’re starting fresh with new energy and looking forward to what this season will bring,” Alisson concluded.
As Liverpool continues its promising start to the new Premier League season, Alisson remains a key figure in the team’s ambitions, underlining his commitment to both the club and its future successes.
