Liverpool’s dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford has been overshadowed by a controversial VAR decision that has sparked criticism. The Reds continued their perfect start to the Premier League season, comfortably outplaying their rivals, but a contentious moment involving VAR raised questions about the consistency of officiating decisions.
Liverpool took control of the match early on, with Luis Diaz scoring twice in the first half. Mohamed Salah added a third goal shortly after the break, effectively quashing any hopes of a United comeback. Despite the comprehensive scoreline, which arguably flattered Manchester United given Liverpool’s overall superiority, the visitors could have extended their lead further, as they squandered several clear opportunities.
One of the most debated incidents occurred in the second half when United defender Noussair Mazraoui appeared to make contact with Cody Gakpo’s leg inside the penalty area. Referee Anthony Taylor allowed play to continue, believing the foul had occurred outside the box and granted an advantage, which resulted in Darwin Nunez missing a subsequent shot. Despite the potential for a significant penalty call, VAR, overseen by John Brooks with assistant VAR Harry Lennard, did not intervene to review the incident.
Former Liverpool player Neil Mellor voiced his frustration with the decision on social media platform X, expressing his belief that the incident warranted a penalty. Mellor shared images of the challenge and argued that VAR should have advised the referee to award a penalty based on the contact inside the penalty area. He highlighted that the referee’s decision to play advantage, followed by the wide shot by Nunez, should not have precluded a penalty review if the foul occurred within the box.
“The referee saw the foul on Gakpo and indicated advantage… Nunez shot wide,” Mellor posted. “Contact was inside the area… so why didn’t VAR tell him it should be a penalty?” Although the decision did not affect the overall outcome of the game, it reignited debates among fans about the inconsistent application of VAR and the standards of refereeing in the Premier League.
This incident was not the only contentious VAR moment over the weekend. On Saturday, Arsenal supporters were left furious when Declan Rice was handed a second yellow card for time-wasting by kicking the ball away. In contrast, Brighton’s Joao Pedro was not penalized for a similar act, highlighting perceived inconsistencies in disciplinary decisions.
Liverpool will now look to maintain their impressive run of form when they take on Nottingham Forest after the upcoming international break. Meanwhile, questions over VAR’s reliability and the consistency of officiating are likely to persist, as fans and pundits alike continue to scrutinize the application of these crucial decisions in key moments of matches.
