Manuel Ugarte’s debut for Manchester United has been met with widespread praise from fans after the team’s commanding 3-0 win over Southampton. The Uruguayan midfielder, who joined United from Paris Saint-Germain for £42.2 million this summer, made his first appearance in the match and left an immediate positive impression on supporters.

Heading into the game, Manchester United was desperate for a win, having suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool before the international break. Their opponents, Southampton, were newly promoted and looking to cause an upset. United faced an early scare when Diogo Dalot conceded a penalty after fouling Southampton’s Tyler Dibling in the box. However, Southampton forward Cameron Archer was unable to capitalize on the chance, as United goalkeeper Andre Onana made a crucial save, keeping the game level.

The momentum quickly shifted in United’s favor. Defender Matthijs de Ligt, who recently joined the squad, opened the scoring with his first goal for the club. Marcus Rashford followed up with a second goal before halftime, finally breaking a frustrating 13-match goal drought. These goals gave United a comfortable lead going into the break, and they continued to dominate play in the second half.

With 15 minutes remaining, manager Erik ten Hag decided to bring Ugarte onto the pitch. Despite only having a brief period to make an impact, Ugarte showcased his talent, particularly in winning the ball back in dangerous areas. His energy and aggressive pressing caught the attention of fans, who quickly took to social media to voice their admiration. One fan remarked, “Ugarte’s ability to win the ball in Southampton’s half is exactly why he’s in the team.” Another was equally enthusiastic, stating, “Ugarte will be a key player for us in midfield.” Others even humorously speculated about the future, with one fan suggesting, “Is it too early to call Ugarte and [Kobbie] Mainoo the greatest midfield duo in Premier League history?”

The game took a further turn in United’s favor when Southampton defender Jack Stephens was sent off for a reckless tackle on Alejandro Garnacho. After the red card, Garnacho added United’s third goal, sealing a well-earned victory.

Ugarte’s impressive cameo has already raised questions about Casemiro’s future role in the team. The Brazilian midfielder, who has been a staple in United’s lineup, started on the bench and was only brought on for the final three minutes. With Ugarte making a strong case for more playing time, some are speculating that he could soon become a regular starter, potentially pushing Casemiro out of the starting lineup.

Ugarte’s full debut could come as soon as Manchester United’s upcoming Carabao Cup fixture against Barnsley on Tuesday. United will also be looking ahead to their next Premier League match against Crystal Palace, where fans will be eager to see more of their new midfield star.
