Shocking news emerged this morning as Darwin Nunez was excluded from the lineup for the Wolves match.

Darwin Núñez will miss Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League match against Wolves, scheduled for Saturday evening, due to illness. This news was confirmed by James Carroll, Liverpool’s director of editorial content, who shared the update on X (formerly known as Twitter). Núñez’s absence is a setback for Liverpool, as the Uruguayan forward has been a significant contributor this season, recording two goals or assists in six appearances across all competitions.

On a positive note, Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, will return to the starting lineup, which was anticipated following comments made during Arne Slot’s pre-match press conference. Alisson’s presence is crucial, as his reliability between the posts will help bolster Liverpool’s defense as they aim for another win.

Liverpool have the opportunity to climb to the top of the Premier League table with a victory at Molineux, especially after Manchester City’s earlier 1-1 draw with Newcastle United. The Reds are looking to capitalize on this slip-up by their title rivals. Despite Núñez’s unavailability, Liverpool’s squad depth in attack is notable, allowing them to cope without their No.9. This speaks to the strength of the team, particularly in the forward positions, where they have multiple options to rotate.

Although Núñez’s absence is unfortunate, it provides an opportunity for Diogo Jota to step up. Jota, who previously played for Wolves, will likely be eager to make an impact against his former club. Despite a relatively slow start to the season with only two goal contributions in the Premier League, Jota’s overall statistics remain commendable. With a goal involvement every 103.5 minutes, he remains a consistent threat in front of goal. With the October international break looming, Jota has the perfect chance to get back to his goal-scoring form, especially with the next fixture against Crystal Palace on the horizon.

For Wolves, the match poses a significant challenge. Under manager Gary O’Neil, Wolves currently find themselves at the bottom of the Premier League table. They’ve struggled defensively this season, having conceded 14 goals so far—only Everton has conceded more with 15. Wolves’ defensive frailties, particularly their average of 2.8 goals conceded per game, make them vulnerable to Liverpool’s potent attack.

O’Neil will be hoping for a stronger performance at home, but Liverpool’s form and offensive capabilities suggest they will be eager to take advantage of Wolves’ defensive struggles. Jota, with his sharp movement and eye for goal, will have plenty of chances to add to his goal tally, making this a tough task for Wolves to contain Liverpool’s firepower.
