“‘Biggest robbery of the year!’ Fans furious as referee permits Manchester City’s stoppage-time goal, sparking debate over offside decision.”

Referee Chris Kavanagh opted to uphold John Stones’ late goal against Wolves, even after being prompted to review the play by VAR. Stones seemed to have clinched a dramatic victory for Manchester City in stoppage time when he headed the ball into the net, only to discover that the goal had been initially disallowed.

After celebrating enthusiastically with the fans, Stones learned that the goal was being reviewed by VAR. The VAR official, Stuart Atwell, advised Kavanagh to check the monitor on the pitch since the goal had been ruled out due to Bernardo Silva’s position relative to Wolves goalkeeper José Sá at the time of the header.

In many cases, when referees are called to review a play at the monitor, they often reverse their original decisions. This time, however, Kavanagh decided to award the goal, sparking ecstatic celebrations from the City players and fans.

The Premier League Match Centre later explained the rationale behind this decision on X (formerly known as Twitter). They stated that the initial disallowance was due to Silva being in an offside position, which raised concerns about him obstructing the goalkeeper’s view during the play. However, the VAR analysis concluded that Silva was not actually obstructing Sá’s sight and had no impact on the situation, leading to the recommendation for Kavanagh to review the footage.

Although Silva was indeed in an offside position and had ducked just as Stones made contact with the ball, he was located slightly to the side of Sá and not directly in front of him, which was a crucial factor in the VAR’s assessment.

This moment marked Stones’ second critical late contribution to Manchester City’s success in recent weeks, having also scored a late equalizer against Arsenal the previous month. His decisive goal against Wolves helped to secure a vital win for City, allowing them to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League, at least temporarily, while awaiting the outcome of Liverpool’s match against Chelsea.

City’s comeback was particularly impressive, considering they were trailing early in the game after Jorgen Strand Larsen scored for Wolves. However, they managed to equalize through Josko Gvardiol’s powerful strike before Stones ultimately sealed the victory, overcoming several outstanding saves made by Sá throughout the match. This thrilling finish not only highlighted Stones’ importance to the team but also underscored the unpredictable nature of football, especially in high-stakes matches where every decision can significantly impact the final outcome.
