After Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph at Wembley, renowned football manager José Mourinho shared his candid opinion on Arsenal’s prospects in next season’s competition. The two-time Champions League-winning coach expressed skepticism about the Gunners’ ability to secure the prestigious trophy, singling out a specific player as a crucial obstacle to their success.
“Arsenal had an outstanding season and deserve full recognition for qualifying for the Champions League,” Mourinho began. “However, I don’t see them lifting the trophy next year unless they address one key issue. A lot of it comes down to their situation at wingback.”
Mourinho specifically criticized Arsenal’s left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko, suggesting that the Ukrainian defender might be a weak link in the team’s setup. “Zinchenko is undeniably a talented player, but when it comes to high-pressure European games, his distribution and decision-making leave much to be desired,” he remarked.
The former manager of Chelsea and Manchester United emphasized the importance of defensive reliability in the Champions League, where the competition is at its toughest. “In this tournament, you’re up against the world’s best attacking teams,” Mourinho explained. “To succeed, you need full-backs who are not only defensively sound but also capable of maintaining composure and dictating the game’s tempo. Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal was a perfect example of this tonight in their win against Dortmund. I’m not convinced Zinchenko has demonstrated the same level of consistency or reliability at this stage.”
Mourinho pointed to some of Zinchenko’s recent performances, highlighting issues such as passing accuracy and occasional rash decisions. “These are areas where he’s struggled, and against elite opponents, such mistakes are costly. In the Champions League, you can’t afford to make errors like those because they will be punished,” he cautioned.
Concluding his analysis, Mourinho noted that while Arsenal has assembled a promising and youthful squad, there are still areas that need improvement before they can compete at the highest level in Europe. “Arsenal is a dynamic and exciting team, and they’re definitely on the right track,” he said. “But until they resolve their left-back concerns, I don’t see them as genuine contenders for the Champions League title. They still have some distance to cover before they can match the very best.”
Mourinho’s comments are likely to spark debate among Arsenal fans and provide food for thought for manager Mikel Arteta as he looks to further strengthen his team for the challenges ahead in European competition.
