Rio Ferdinand: Manchester United Star Struggling to Adapt to Ruben Amorim’s System

    adminBy adminNovember 26, 2024No Comments3 Mins Read

Ruben Amorim has the opportunity to mold his Manchester United squad in upcoming transfer windows, but for now, he must optimize the players already at his disposal. Among them is Alejandro Garnacho, whose role under Amorim’s 3-4-3 system has sparked debate. Former player and pundit Robbie Savage has suggested that Garnacho’s current deployment as a creative central attacker—a “number ten”—may not align with his strengths.

Previously thriving as a winger under Erik ten Hag, Garnacho excelled in a 4-2-3-1 formation. His speed, determination, and ability to take on defenders helped him create chances, win fouls, and score goals. However, Amorim’s 3-4-3 system demands more creativity from central attackers, a shift that doesn’t seem to suit Garnacho’s natural style of play. Savage argues that Garnacho’s attributes could be better utilized in a wing-back role, a position that could leverage his work rate and offensive instincts while reducing the creative demands currently placed on him.

Garnacho’s recent statistics reveal the challenges of adapting to a central role. While he leads the team in goals (3) and ranks second in shots per game (2.8), his lower numbers in key passes per game (0.8, tied for 8th) and dribbles per game (0.5, 9th) suggest limited effectiveness as a creative playmaker. Additionally, his average match rating of 6.58 places him 12th in the squad, further underscoring the mismatch between his abilities and his current role.

Savage believes Garnacho’s energy and drive make him an ideal candidate for the wing-back position. As a wing-back, Garnacho could capitalize on the space available to run at defenders, contribute to attacks from deeper positions, and track back defensively. This shift could also help Manchester United address their lack of attacking fluidity by allowing more creative players, such as Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo, or Mason Mount, to assume central attacking responsibilities.

Manchester United currently relies on Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot in wing-back roles. However, Garnacho’s integration into this position could add a new dimension, particularly when facing defensively compact opponents. His adaptability and attacking flair could make him a valuable asset on the flanks, providing balance and dynamism in Amorim’s system.

Ultimately, transitioning Garnacho to a wing-back role would require tactical adjustments and targeted training but could offer significant benefits for both player and team. This move aligns with Amorim’s need to maximize his resources while developing a cohesive squad capable of executing his vision. If successful, Garnacho could emerge as a versatile and influential figure in Amorim’s plans.
