Former Benfica striker Jonas Gonçalves Oliveira, widely known as Jonas, has shared his delight over Ruben Amorim’s recent appointment as Manchester United’s manager. Reflecting on their time as teammates at Benfica, Jonas praised Amorim’s qualities both on and off the pitch, suggesting that his departure from Sporting CP might work in favor of their former club.
Speaking on the *Zuca e Tuga* podcast, Jonas recalled the brief season they spent together at Benfica over a decade ago. He highlighted Amorim’s intelligence and his warm, supportive demeanor. “Ruben was one of the first people to welcome me when I arrived in Lisbon. He told me I would do well at Benfica, and that meant a lot to me,” Jonas said. “Although we only played together for one season, I could see his sharpness and thoughtfulness as a player.”
Jonas, who made 183 appearances for Benfica and remains deeply connected to the club, humorously acknowledged that Amorim’s exit from Sporting CP might benefit Benfica in the Portuguese league. While celebrating Amorim’s rise as a coach, he quipped, “I’m thrilled for him because he’s such a good person. But honestly, I’m also happy he left Sporting—it’s better for Benfica.”
