Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has shared his thoughts on Manchester United’s upcoming Premier League match against Arsenal, predicting a straightforward victory for the home side. The game is set to take place at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, with kick-off scheduled for 8:15 pm UK time.
Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November after moving from Sporting CP, is preparing for his toughest challenge yet. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach has experienced a mix of results since his arrival. His tenure began with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town in the Championship, followed by a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League, and a commanding 4-0 victory against Everton in the Premier League last weekend.
Currently ninth in the league and four points off the top four, United face an Arsenal side that sits second, nine points adrift of league leaders Liverpool. Despite United’s recent resurgence, Amorim will be without key players Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, both suspended after picking up cards in the win over Everton.
Paul Merson, however, sees a silver lining in Martinez’s absence. In his Sportskeeda column, he suggested that Harry Maguire’s likely inclusion in a three-man defense could strengthen United against Arsenal’s set-piece threat. “Arsenal’s effectiveness from set-pieces this season has been exceptional,” Merson wrote. “But Harry Maguire’s height and aerial ability could be a key defensive asset.”
Despite this, Merson is confident Arsenal will dominate. Highlighting the cohesion and form of Mikel Arteta’s squad, he predicted a decisive 3-0 victory for the Gunners. “Arsenal are playing with precision and confidence. United, under Amorim, are still finding their feet, so I can’t see any outcome other than an Arsenal win,” Merson concluded.
