Liverpool fans were left furious following a contentious penalty decision that went against their team during Saturday’s home match against Fulham. The frustration began early, as Issa Diop and Andreas Pereira made aggressive challenges on Andy Robertson and Ryan Gravenberch, setting a combative tone for the game.

Fulham took the lead in the first half when Andreas Pereira executed an impressive acrobatic finish. Liverpool’s troubles worsened when Robertson was sent off after a poor first touch allowed Harry Wilson to break free, leading to a desperate challenge from the Reds’ defender. Reduced to ten men, Liverpool faced an uphill battle but managed to pull level shortly after halftime through Cody Gakpo.

However, the match’s most controversial moment unfolded soon after the equalizer. Gakpo, attacking from the left flank, cut inside as Joe Gomez made an overlapping run. Gomez collided heavily with Fulham’s Kenny Tete, a clash that left the Liverpool player injured and unable to continue. While Tete appeared to block Gakpo’s shot, the collision with Gomez looked like a potential foul. Despite Liverpool’s appeals, the referee waved play on, and VAR chose not to intervene, much to the dismay of players and fans alike.

The decision to deny the penalty infuriated Liverpool supporters, with one fan stating, “VAR needs to be held accountable for this shambles. Fulham should have been down to ten men and conceded a penalty.” Another questioned the reliability of the system, asking, “Is VAR on strike? That was a clear penalty.” The anger intensified as Gomez’s injury forced him to be substituted for Timothy Castagne, leaving Liverpool’s backline further depleted.

Adding to Liverpool’s woes, Fulham regained the lead in the 76th minute when Rodrigo Munoz scored following a second assist from Antonee Robinson. With time running out, it appeared that Liverpool was heading toward their first defeat since losing to Nottingham Forest earlier in the season. However, the drama wasn’t over. Diogo Jota struck late to secure a 2-2 draw for Arne Slot’s side, salvaging a point in a match filled with controversy.

The contentious decisions overshadowed what was otherwise a gripping encounter, leaving Liverpool fans and players alike feeling that justice had not been served. Many called for greater accountability and consistency in officiating, with the use of VAR once again under heavy scrutiny.
