“Sir Jim Ratcliffe reveals he favored signing Isak or Gyökeres, but admits he couldn’t overrule Ruben Amorim, who insisted on just one striker target for Manchester United this summer.”

Manchester United are making headlines with their latest transfer plans, as they have reportedly identified Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap as their top target to strengthen their centre-forward department, according to ESPN. The Red Devils have struggled in front of goal this season, managing to score only 37 times in 31 Premier League matches—a tally far below expectations for a club of their stature. With Ruben Amorim expected to take charge as manager, the club appears ready for a significant change in attack.

Delap, who joined Ipswich Town from Manchester City for £20 million last summer, has been a standout performer in what has otherwise been a difficult campaign for the newly promoted side. The 22-year-old forward has scored 12 goals in 30 league appearances, showcasing his potential as a traditional centre-forward with a strong physical presence, excellent hold-up play, and aerial dominance. Despite Ipswich facing likely relegation, Delap’s performances have not gone unnoticed, and United are now leading the race for his signature.

Interestingly, Delap has a relegation release clause in his contract set at £40 million, which United are reportedly willing to meet. Although Manchester City have a buy-back clause for the same fee, they have no intention of re-signing the player due to their long-term commitment to Erling Haaland, who recently signed a lengthy contract extension. As part of the original deal, City will receive 20 percent of any profit Ipswich make from Delap’s future sale.

United’s choice to prioritize Delap over more high-profile targets like Viktor Gyökeres, Victor Osimhen, and Benjamin Šeško appears to be influenced by financial constraints. Nevertheless, the move could prove to be a clever piece of business. Delap has shown signs of being able to thrive in the Premier League’s demanding environment, adapting well to the physicality and intensity of the competition. His shot-to-goal conversion rate stands at an impressive 20 percent, underlining his efficiency in front of goal.

Currently outperforming both Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee—who have only six league goals between them this season—Delap looks like a more suitable option for United’s attacking needs. With greater support and creativity from teammates at Old Trafford, there’s belief he could hit the 20-goal mark per season. Despite being relatively young and not yet a global star, Delap’s rise and raw potential have convinced United to place their trust in him as the long-term solution up front. It’s a bold yet potentially savvy move that could shape their offensive line for years to come.
