Chelsea in talks to sign ‘next Haaland’ as potential upgrade on Victor Osimhen.

Over the years, Chelsea fans have had the pleasure of watching a host of elite strikers lead the club to domestic and European success. Among these stars, Didier Drogba remains the most iconic, having made a lasting mark at Stamford Bridge. Drogba scored over 100 goals across two separate spells with the club and is best remembered for his unforgettable equaliser in the 2012 Champions League final, which Chelsea eventually won—cementing his place as a legend in the club’s history.

Drogba’s 2004 arrival from Marseille is still considered one of the club’s finest pieces of transfer business, with his contributions on the biggest stages playing a key role in Chelsea’s modern golden era. However, in recent seasons, the club has struggled to find a consistent and reliable presence in the striker position. Despite heavy investment in attacking players, the team continues to lack the kind of clinical frontman that once defined their success.

This season, under new head coach Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s attacking inconsistencies have continued. Nicolas Jackson, who was expected to take on the main striker role, has struggled for form and consistency. His recent underwhelming performance against Newcastle further highlighted Chelsea’s lack of cutting-edge in front of goal, prompting the club’s leadership to prioritize strengthening the centre-forward position in the upcoming summer transfer window.

As part of their efforts to address this issue, Chelsea have been linked with several attacking talents. Names such as Liam Delap and Jonathan David—who could be available for free after his contract with Lille expires—have surfaced. However, one emerging target is drawing significant interest: Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig. Reports from TEAMtalk suggest that Chelsea have already begun talks with Sesko’s representatives. The 21-year-old Slovenian has enjoyed a breakout 2024/25 season, scoring 21 goals across all competitions and drawing attention for his efficiency and physicality.

Sesko is now being viewed as a key transfer target, especially as the club assesses other options like Victor Osimhen. Although Osimhen has delivered an impressive campaign on loan at Galatasaray, with 24 goals in 28 appearances, his potential transfer could exceed £60 million—a fee that could deter Chelsea, particularly with competition from other Premier League clubs.

Comparatively, Sesko may present a better overall package. Not only is he likely to be more affordable, but his technical ability and consistency in front of goal give him an edge. Statistically, Sesko records more shots on target and completes more passes per game than Osimhen. He also thrives in aerial duels and one-on-one scenarios, attributes that Chelsea have been missing, particularly when it comes to making the most of their crossing opportunities.

With a playing style reminiscent of Manchester City star Erling Haaland, according to scout Jacek Kulig, Sesko’s all-around skill set makes him a compelling option. His combination of physical presence, sharp finishing, and build-up play could provide the kind of attacking leadership Chelsea have lacked since the departure of Drogba. In short, while both Sesko and Osimhen would bolster Chelsea’s forward line, Sesko appears to be the more complete and financially sensible choice for Maresca’s ongo
