Manchester United have reportedly begun negotiations to secure the signing of AC Milan forward Rafael Leão, according to Spanish outlet *Fichajes*, in what would be a bold and somewhat surprising move as part of the club’s major attacking overhaul this summer under new manager Rúben Amorim.
Following a disappointing campaign where United struggled significantly in front of goal, the club has made strengthening the attack a top priority during the current transfer window. So far, they’ve made progress with some new additions. They have already acquired Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal believed to be worth around £62.5 million. Additionally, they are actively working on a potential transfer for Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo, who is also valued at a similar price by his club.
The interest in Leão comes amid expected major changes in United’s wide attacking options. According to *Fichajes*, the Red Devils are preparing for the possible departures of several current wingers, including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho. With this in mind, they are looking to bring in a high-profile wide forward, and Rafael Leão has emerged as a top target.
However, Manchester United are not alone in their pursuit of the Portuguese international. Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have also shown strong interest, particularly as they prepare for the potential exit of Leroy Sané. Both clubs are expected to make concrete efforts to sign Leão in the coming weeks.
AC Milan are well aware of the increasing interest in their star player, but they are reluctant to let him go without a significant financial return. Leão still has three years remaining on his current contract, and Milan have reportedly placed a hefty price tag of £84 million on him. That said, recent reports suggest that the player is open to leaving the San Siro after a challenging season, which could push Milan to lower their asking price. A fee in the region of £59 million might be enough to convince them to sell.
Leão has been one of Milan’s standout performers in recent seasons, playing a pivotal role in their Serie A title win in 2021/22 and lifting the Supercoppa Italiana last season. While he wasn’t at his absolute best last term, he still managed to score 12 goals and provide 11 assists across 50 appearances in all competitions.
Despite Leão’s undeniable talent, some argue that Manchester United might not need to pursue another wide forward if they succeed in landing Mbeumo. Instead, they could benefit more from investing that money into acquiring a top-tier striker and a creative midfielder.
Regardless, it remains to be seen whether United will follow up their initial interest with a formal offer for Leão during this transfer window.
