Liverpool receive major fitness lift with Alisson Becker, Giovanni Leoni, and Jeremie Frimpong set to return right after the international break.

Liverpool’s 2025/26 season has been defined by a frustrating run of injuries to some of their most influential players, but there is renewed belief around Anfield that the worst of their fitness problems is finally behind them. After months of coping with an incomplete squad, Arne Slot is close to having several key figures available again once the international break concludes — a development that could significantly alter the direction of Liverpool’s campaign.

Slot, who has faced a challenging introduction to life in the Premier League, has been forced to navigate a series of setbacks involving major first-team players. The recent 3–0 defeat to Manchester City underlined how badly the team has struggled without adequate depth, with the absence of natural options in both attack and defence becoming painfully clear. Yet amid the disappointment at the Etihad, there was a positive sign: Alexander Isak was named in the matchday squad for the first time since sustaining a groin injury. Although he didn’t make it onto the pitch, his inclusion showed that he is progressing well in his recovery.

Before the match, Slot explained that Isak had only recently returned to full training after three weeks on the sidelines. Though the Swedish forward still needs time to regain rhythm and match sharpness, his imminent return is expected to give Liverpool’s misfiring attack a huge lift. Without a recognised number nine, Slot has been forced into tactical improvisation, leading to inconsistency in the final third. Isak’s comeback should restore structure and provide the ruthless edge Liverpool have been missing.

In addition to Isak, the Reds are also closing in on the return of Alisson Becker and Jeremie Frimpong — two players whose absences have been particularly damaging. Alisson’s authority, communication, and shot-stopping have been extremely difficult to replace during a period when Liverpool’s defensive confidence has visibly wavered. Meanwhile, Frimpong’s pace, energy, and attacking intent from the right flank have been sorely missed, limiting Slot’s options both in build-up play and in transitional moments.

Encouraging reports suggest that both players are on course to be available shortly after international duty ends, giving Slot a much-needed boost as Liverpool attempt to revive their Premier League title ambitions. With Isak, Alisson, and Frimpong all edging closer to full fitness — as well as young talent Giovanni Leoni reportedly making good progress — Liverpool finally look set to emerge from their injury crisis.

Their return could not come at a more crucial time, offering the squad an opportunity to reset and push forward with renewed strength once domestic football resumes.
