Premier League Adjusts VAR Protocols After Liverpool’s Mistake

    adminBy adminOctober 11, 2023No Comments2 Mins Read

The Premier League recently witnessed a regrettable incident during Liverpool’s match against Tottenham, prompting a substantial adjustment to the VAR process. This alteration aims to prevent a recurrence of such mishaps in future games. The incident involved a “significant human error” where Liverpool’s opening goal, scored by Luis Diaz, was wrongly disallowed for offside due to a miscommunication between the VAR official and the referee.

The error caused an uproar, prompting criticism directed at the PGMOL and VAR. Liverpool, rightfully aggrieved, received an apology from the PGMOL after the match and proceeded to formally request the raw audio files to further investigate the incident. To address the issue, the PGMOL declared modifications to the VAR protocol. Now, the VAR official is required to consult with assistants before conveying the decision to the on-field referee.

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, expressed his stance during a news conference, advocating for a proper resolution to the situation. He acknowledged the mistake made by the officials and emphasized the need for a comprehensive and just handling of the incident. Klopp also highlighted that while a game replay would be an ideal resolution, it’s an impractical expectation.

In light of this incident, the football community awaits the implementation of these new VAR protocols, hopeful that they will enhance the accuracy and fairness of future games. The aim is to uphold the integrity of the sport, ensuring that such errors are minimized to the greatest extent possible, fostering a sense of trust and fairness among teams and fans alike. The onus is on the football governing bodies to continually refine and improve the VAR system, learning from past mistakes to elevate the overall quality of officiating in the beautiful game.
