“Former Liverpool Legend Supports Southgate’s Decision to Exclude Raheem Sterling; Suggests Jack Grealish’s Squad Presence Doesn’t Guarantee England Starting Spot”

    adminBy adminNovember 20, 2023No Comments2 Mins Read

Former Liverpool player John Barnes supports Gareth Southgate’s decision to exclude Raheem Sterling from recent England squads, despite Sterling’s impressive performance for Chelsea during the 2023–24 season. Although Sterling has excelled with five goals and two assists, Southgate has not selected him since the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In a recent interview with bonuscodebets.co.uk, Barnes defended Southgate, acknowledging Sterling’s recent success but emphasizing the tough choices the England manager faces. Barnes explained, “Gareth Southgate has a lot of talented players to choose from, so it’s a tough spot to be in.” While Sterling’s recent form might suggest inclusion, Barnes believes that Southgate’s decision isn’t a major issue.

Sterling’s notable contribution to Chelsea, particularly in the 4–4 draw against Manchester City, raised questions about Southgate’s decision. Barnes, however, pointed out that the squad selection occurred before the City game and expressed confidence that Sterling would eventually return to the national team.

Barnes acknowledged the diversity of opinions among fans regarding squad selections but placed trust in Southgate’s judgment. He highlighted the manager’s prerogative to choose players based on their specific skills and roles within the team. Barnes compared Sterling to other options like Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford, noting that each player brings unique attributes.

While Grealish may not start regularly for England, Barnes suggested he serves as a valuable option off the bench, contrasting with Sterling, who might not be content with a substitute role. Despite fan opinions, Barnes supported Southgate’s autonomy in shaping the team and adapting tactics based on the players at his disposal.
