Erik ten Hag delivers discouraging update after Manchester United’s draw with Liverpool tonight.

In a hard-fought match, Manchester United exhibited resilience, securing a goalless draw against Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League. Despite both teams having their moments, neither was able to break the deadlock, resulting in a shared point.

Manager Erik ten Hag witnessed a gritty performance from his side, displaying a fighting spirit often absent in their away games this season. Although Liverpool didn’t significantly test goalkeeper Andre Onana, Manchester United had chances to secure victory through players like Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund, showcasing their potential to capitalize on opportunities.

Upon analyzing the match, it became apparent that replicating last season’s approach could yield better results for Manchester United. Last season’s success was attributed to a compact midfield and a preference for counterattacks with a fast forward line.

This season, a shift in strategy, attempting to win the ball higher up the pitch, left the defense exposed, granting opponents ample space on the counter. Against Liverpool, ten Hag opted for a more compact midfield, limiting space for the opposition to exploit through the middle.

Deploying Scott McTominay as an attacking midfielder provided clarity in defensive roles, contributing to a more organized defensive structure. Kobbie Mainoo’s consistent performances added to the team’s stability.

Raphael Varane, often overlooked for tactical reasons during the team’s recent struggles, demonstrated his defensive prowess. Varane’s calmness under pressure and defensive security highlighted his importance as the club’s best defender when fit. Despite reports suggesting a potential departure in January, Varane’s performance emphasized his value to the team.

Looking ahead, ten Hag may benefit from a return to basics, allowing players to operate in their natural positions. The focus on defensive compactness and utilizing the pace in the forward line could prove effective, especially as the team navigates through injury concerns. While tactical adjustments are essential, maintaining simplicity and adhering to successful past strategies could contribute to Manchester United’s resurgence in the league.
