Pep Lijnders, ahead of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against West Ham, has advised the club’s leadership to find the best solution for Fabio Carvalho if he returns from his loan at RB Leipzig. The 21-year-old has seen limited playing time in Germany, featuring in just one Bundesliga start. Reports hint at Liverpool terminating Carvalho’s season-long loan.
Speaking to the media, Jurgen Klopp’s assistant stressed the importance of Carvalho getting playing minutes, whether at Anfield or elsewhere, to regain rhythm and confidence. Lijnders underlined, “Finding rhythm is crucial. A player’s confidence and performance change significantly based on their rhythm and training routines. While he needs minutes, the decision lies with our directors to discuss and determine the best course for him.”
Recent reports from The Daily Mail suggest Liverpool may make a conclusive decision this week, recalling Carvalho from Leipzig and arranging a new loan move in January. Carvalho recently played a full 90 minutes in a Champions League match against Young Boys for Leipzig, but with the team’s secured position, the coach made significant lineup changes. His role in the upcoming match against Werder Bremen could clarify his standing within the Leipzig squad. If he doesn’t play, Liverpool might end the loan.
Considering Ben Doak’s injury and Mo Salah’s upcoming absence for the Africa Cup of Nations, Liverpool may retain Carvalho for squad depth in January. However, if he continues to struggle for opportunities, another loan move seems likely. Lijnders emphasized that, at this career stage, regular playing time is crucial for the former Fulham player. No final decision has been reached, leaving Liverpool to weigh the options for Carvalho’s future.
