Liverpool is reportedly still keen on securing the services of young Chelsea talent Levi Colwill as they actively seek defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window.
The 20-year-old has been a consistent presence in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup, participating in nearly all of Chelsea’s 27 games this season, with 23 of those as a starter. His impressive performances led to an international debut in October, and he is now being considered for a place in the England squad for Euro 2024. Colwill’s promising trajectory was evident during successful loan spells at Huddersfield and Brighton.
Despite attracting interest from several teams last summer, including Liverpool, Brighton, Manchester City, and Tottenham, Pochettino was determined to retain Colwill. Consequently, the young defender signed a new contract, extending his stay at Chelsea until 2029.
Recent reports from TalkSPORT suggest that Liverpool is monitoring Colwill’s situation closely and may take action given their defensive needs. With Joel Matip ruled out for the season and injuries to left-backs Kyle Andrews and Kostas Tsimikas, Liverpool is in urgent need of defensive reinforcements. While Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to return from knee surgery by the end of the month, the Premier League leaders are aware of the necessity to bolster their defensive options.
Colwill’s versatility, capable of playing both left- and center-back positions, makes him an appealing prospect for Jurgen Klopp. Despite being a homegrown player, there is no indication that Chelsea is open to selling him, even if a potential transfer would bring financial gain. This situation could somewhat benefit Todd Boehly and his associates, who are cautious about adhering to Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
Chelsea’s reluctance to part with their homegrown talent is evident in the possible moves of fellow homegrown players Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja to foreign clubs. While Colwill is expected to feature in Chelsea’s crucial Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg clash with Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, Liverpool remains vigilant about the defender’s circumstances.
