Liverpool is reportedly showing ongoing interest in Chelsea’s emerging talent, Levi Colwill, as they actively pursue a new defender during the January transfer window.
The 20-year-old has solidified his position in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup, participating in almost all of Chelsea’s 27 games this season, with 23 of those being starts. Colwill, who made his international debut in October, is now in contention for a spot in the England squad for Euro 2024, following successful loan spells at Huddersfield and Brighton.
Jürgen Klopp is positioned to secure a crucial Chelsea player to address Liverpool’s defensive concerns after losing Moises Caicedo in the previous transfer window. Despite attracting interest from various teams last summer, including Liverpool, Brighton, Manchester City, and Tottenham, Colwill chose to remain with Chelsea. Pochettino was eager to retain him, and he eventually signed a new deal, committing to the club until 2029.
Reports suggest that Liverpool is keeping a close eye on Colwill’s situation and may contemplate making a move, considering their current need for defensive reinforcements. With Joel Matip out for the season and injuries to left-backs Kyle Andrews and Kostas Tsimikas, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold expected to return from knee surgery soon, Liverpool is in need of defensive options.
Colwill’s versatility, capable of playing as a left- and center-back, makes him an attractive prospect for Jurgen Klopp. However, Chelsea, while benefiting financially, is unlikely to be open to selling the homegrown player. Chelsea’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) concerns could play a role in this decision, providing some financial relief to Todd Boehly and associates. This situation is also intertwined with fellow homegrown players Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja, who are reportedly linked to moves abroad.
Colwill is anticipated to play a crucial role in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg matchup against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.
