Jose Mourinho, presently without a managerial position following his recent departure from Roma, is reportedly expressing a keen interest in returning for a second stint as the manager of Manchester United. The 61-year-old Portuguese coach, as per sources, considers his previous tenure at the club as having “unfinished business,” particularly due to the circumstances surrounding his departure.
Despite Mourinho setting a personal goal to manage Manchester United again, the likelihood of this happening soon appears slim. The current manager, Erik ten Hag, is in the second season of his three-year contract, and fans are optimistic about his future, especially with the INEOS group taking control of sporting operations.
Mourinho’s initial tenure at Manchester United faced internal challenges, including friction over the failure to secure key transfer targets and other personnel issues. In 2016, he took charge as the third permanent manager after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. His first season brought success with high-profile signings like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba, leading to victories in the Carabao Cup and Europa League.
However, challenges arose during the 2018 summer transfer window when the club made limited signings. Despite a notable comeback win in October 2018, Mourinho’s time at United concluded just over two months later after a defeat to Liverpool, marking a run of poor league performances.
As Mourinho contemplates a potential return to management, the prospect of leading Manchester United again remains a personal ambition. Nevertheless, obstacles such as the current managerial stability under Erik ten Hag and positive fan sentiment indicate that Mourinho’s desired reunion with Manchester United may face significant hurdles in the immediate future.
