Graham Potter is reportedly being considered for the role of Sweden’s national team manager, shortly after being linked to possibly replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United. Potter, dismissed by Chelsea in April after a mixed record, has been out of work since.
Recent reports hinted at Potter being a candidate for the Manchester United managerial position if Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS opted for a change in leadership. Ratcliffe, set to acquire a 25 percent stake in the club, is expected to make changes to the support staff at Old Trafford.
Potter, endorsed by INEOS chief Dave Brailsford, had prior links with Nice, another club owned by Ratcliffe. Napoli also reportedly showed interest in Potter for their managerial vacancy.
Now, Potter is emerging as a top contender for the role of Sweden’s national team manager following Janne Anderson’s resignation. Sweden’s failure to qualify for Euro 2024 has prompted the need for new leadership.
Potter is familiar with the Swedish football scene, having spent over seven years at Ostersund, guiding them from the fourth tier to the Europa League. The Swedish FA general secretary, Andrea Mllerberg, confirmed Potter’s consideration for the job.
Mllerberg stated, “The list of names I have received…he is part of that list. We’ll see who is interested; you probably have to be passionate about being the national team coach, especially given the differences from club football. You may have to be ready for certain challenges.”
After leaving Ostersunds in 2018, Potter returned to England to join Championship club Swansea. Following a successful first season, he became Brighton’s head coach, achieving a ninth-place finish in the 2021-22 season. Potter took the Chelsea job the next season, but the potential opportunity to manage Sweden could impact any plans for his future appointment as Manchester United manager. Questions about Ten Hag’s future at Manchester United have also surfaced after their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.
