Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg is contemplating a permanent departure from the club in the upcoming summer transfer window, aiming to secure consistent playing time. The Dutch center-back, who joined Liverpool in 2019 for £1.3 million, has faced limited opportunities, making just four appearances for the Reds since his arrival.

Van den Berg has spent the majority of his time on loan at various clubs, including spells at Preston North End and Schalke 04, and is currently on loan at Mainz 05. In an interview with Voetbal Nieuws, he acknowledged the possibility of seeking a permanent move away from Liverpool due to intense competition for playing time at Anfield.

While recognizing the potential interest of Liverpool in retaining him upon his return, Van den Berg emphasized the importance of regular game time for his development. He expressed uncertainty about his prospects, especially considering the formidable competition posed by Liverpool’s established center-back duo, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

Reflecting on his performance, Van den Berg expressed confidence in his ability to compete at Liverpool’s level but acknowledged the challenge of securing a starting spot. The defensive partnership of Van Dijk and Konate has been pivotal for Liverpool, contributing to the team’s impressive defensive record in the Premier League this season.

Despite the challenges, Van den Berg remains determined and believes in his capabilities. However, he recognizes the difficulty of displacing established defenders like Van Dijk and Konate. Jarell Quansah’s promising performances, particularly in the Europa League, further add to the competition for a place in Liverpool’s defense.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Van den Berg’s decision to potentially leave Liverpool underscores his commitment to regular playing time, a crucial factor in his footballing journey.
