Newcastle Manager Eddie Howe Reveals Disturbing Factors Behind Yesterday’s Loss: Key Player Injuries and Asserts Arsenal Wouldn’t Stand a Chance if Players Were Fit

    adminBy adminFebruary 25, 2024No Comments2 Mins Read

Eddie Howe has voiced his concerns over Newcastle United’s defensive performance, especially after a 4-0 defeat to Arsenal. The Gunners dominated the match, securing goals from Sven Botman (own goal), Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Jakub Kiwior. Despite a late consolation goal from Joe Willock, Newcastle faced significant challenges.

Throughout the season, Newcastle has struggled defensively, conceding 20 goals in 2024, the highest in the English Premier League. Howe acknowledged the issue, expressing worry about every game where they concede goals. While they are actively working behind the scenes to address the problem, improvements weren’t evident in the recent match against Arsenal.

Howe pinpointed specific weaknesses, emphasizing the team’s struggle to defend set pieces effectively, leading to goals conceded from corners despite being aware of the opponent’s threat. He particularly lamented the third goal, considering it a significant disappointment given Newcastle’s dominance at that point.

The manager highlighted the importance of a collective defensive effort, recalling the outstanding collective defense showcased by the team in the previous season. While the desire to defend remains, Howe noted a decline in the team’s proficiency in executing defensive strategies.

Despite currently occupying the seventh position in the Premier League, Newcastle’s inability to secure a victory at the Emirates Stadium since 2010 underscores the magnitude of their defensive struggles. Howe recognizes the urgent need for improvement in defensive solidity to achieve better results in future matches.
