Mauricio Pochettino finds himself in a challenging position as Chelsea’s manager following a season that has fallen short of expectations. Despite making significant signings like Moises Caicedo, Nicolas Jackson, and Cole Palmer in the summer transfer window, Chelsea currently languish in ninth place in the Premier League standings, far from their anticipated dominance.
Reports suggest that Pochettino and his coaching staff are particularly dissatisfied with the performances of two players: wingers Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk. Mudryk, signed for a hefty £88 million, has struggled to make the desired impact, managing only six goals and three assists in 33 games—a disappointment considering the investment made in him. Similarly, despite Sterling’s pedigree as an England international, his contribution of eight goals and eight assists in 38 appearances hasn’t met expectations.
As a result, Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a new winger in the upcoming summer transfer window. One name that has surfaced in the rumor mill is Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao, who could potentially bolster Chelsea’s attacking options.
Pochettino’s frustration was palpable following Chelsea’s recent 2-2 draw with bottom-placed Sheffield United. He lamented the team’s inability to compete consistently, especially against supposedly weaker opponents. Pochettino attributed this struggle to a lack of maturity within the squad and emphasized the need for time to develop cohesion and understanding among the players.
Acknowledging the ongoing process of team building, Pochettino stressed the importance of evaluating the squad’s deficiencies at the end of the season. He emphasized the need to address these issues by acquiring players who can provide solutions to the challenges currently facing the team. While Pochettino acknowledged the inherent time required for such a process, he remains committed to refining Chelsea’s squad for sustained success in the long term.
