Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager, remains unfazed by the prospect of Mohamed Salah attracting interest from Saudi teams in January. Despite rejecting a £150 million bid for the 31-year-old forward before the Premier League transfer window closed, there’s still speculation about his potential transfer to the Saudi Pro League. Michael Emenalo, the director of football for the league, suggested that Salah’s move is still a possibility.
Klopp responded to these rumors with a hint of sarcasm, saying, “You are kidding me, yeah?” He emphasized the timing of the inquiry, pointing out that discussing January transfers a week after the closure of the previous window seems premature. Klopp expressed nonchalance, stating, “I’m not concerned right now, at least not till then.”
Addressing another matter, Klopp commented on former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson’s departure to Al-Ettifaq in the summer. Henderson had claimed that he didn’t feel welcome at Liverpool before his move. Klopp acknowledged Henderson’s honesty, mentioning their discussions about playing time and team dynamics.
Klopp admitted that while he wanted Henderson to stay, they needed to discuss the possibility of reduced playing time. He acknowledged Henderson’s contributions, stating, “‘Hendo’ is a great player and a super guy, but when he’s not playing, he’s not great. I will love him forever.”
The Liverpool manager highlighted the importance of open communication, explaining that discussing scenarios like potential reduced playing time was crucial for their relationship. Klopp expressed regret about being unable to communicate clearly to Henderson that he would have been a pivotal figure in midfield had he stayed.
Henderson’s departure became a reality with Liverpool’s summer acquisitions of midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Klopp acknowledged that Henderson’s move was for the best, despite his desire for the player to stay. He revealed the challenge of conveying to Henderson that he would have been a central figure in the team’s midfield.
In reflecting on Henderson’s comments about not feeling wanted, Klopp admitted, “That appeared as ‘he doesn’t want me here’ in Hendo’s ear and thoughts.” He clarified that he was unable to express his desire for Henderson to stay and be a key player due to the complexities of the situation.
