A Manchester United star player is receiving criticism and being called a traitor following their official move to rival club Liverpool.

Liverpool is on the verge of finalizing their second signing of the summer, with Manchester United defender Gemma Evans poised to join the team. The transfer window has been relatively subdued for Liverpool thus far, with only one previous acquisition. In early July, they strengthened their squad by signing Olivia Smith, a midfielder from Sporting CP.

BBC journalist Emma Sanders reports that negotiations between Liverpool and Manchester United are progressing smoothly, and all involved parties are optimistic about concluding the deal shortly. Evans, who represents Wales internationally, has had a varied career across UK clubs. She began with Cardiff City and Yeovil Town, then moved to Bristol City and Reading before joining Manchester United last summer. Her tenure at United saw her participate in 19 matches across all competitions during the 2023/24 season, including the Women’s Super League, where she recorded one assist.

Despite her regular presence in the squad, Evans made only 12 appearances in the Women’s Super League, indicating she was not always a first-choice player. This situation, combined with Manchester United’s recent surge in new signings, has led to Evans seeking a new opportunity. United has been active in the transfer market this summer, adding players like Dominique Janssen, who joined on a free transfer from Wolfsburg, and Swedish left-back Anna Sandberg, bolstering their defensive lineup.

With the influx of new talent at Manchester United, Evans is looking for a move, and Liverpool has emerged as a strong contender for her services. As Liverpool prepares for their 2024/25 Women’s Super League season, which begins on September 22 with a match against Leicester City, securing a player like Evans could significantly enhance their squad. Liverpool’s interest in Evans reflects their ambition to build a competitive team capable of making a strong impact in the league.

The potential signing of Evans would bring valuable experience from top-tier English football and international competitions to Liverpool. It represents a strategic move by the club to strengthen their roster and improve their prospects for the upcoming season. If the deal is finalized, Evans will be expected to contribute meaningfully to Liverpool’s performance in the Women’s Super League, supporting their goal of achieving success in the forthcoming campaign.
