Reports suggest that there is a possibility of England manager Gareth Southgate being sought after by Premier League clubs following Euro 2024. Although there are speculations that Euro 2024 could be Southgate’s last major tournament with the Three Lions, he has been in charge since 2016.
The Daily Mail indicates that the Football Association (FA) is preparing for Southgate’s potential departure, considering Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola as an ideal replacement. Southgate’s contract is set to expire in December 2024, and while he hasn’t ruled out leaving the national team role, the FA aims to retain him until after the 2026 World Cup, according to BBC Sport.
Despite this, Southgate is being considered as a candidate to take over at Crystal Palace, replacing former England manager Roy Hodgson, as reported by The Sun. Hodgson has faced mounting pressure due to Palace’s recent poor performances, and chairman Steve Parish was contemplating his dismissal before their recent victory over Sheffield United.
A potential move for Southgate to Palace is likely to occur after England’s Euro 2024 campaign and is currently seen as a less probable option. Parish’s preferred choices to succeed Hodgson seem to be former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper, with Lille head coach Paulo Fonseca as an alternative.
Other contenders for the Selhurst Park position include Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Graham Potter, and former Fulham manager Scott Parker. Hodgson aims to guide Palace away from relegation from the Premier League before his contract expires at the end of the current season. They currently sit five points above the relegation zone with one game remaining, facing Chelsea at home on Monday night.
