Manchester United faces uncertainty regarding their defender’s future as fitness issues have led to an extended absence from Erik ten Hag’s squad. Surprisingly, it has been revealed that the player’s contract expires this summer, not in 2025, though there is an option for a one-year extension.
Recent reports indicate Manchester United’s intention to engage in talks with Varane for an entirely new contract, albeit with a reduced salary. This move is in response to underwhelming performances that fail to justify his current substantial wage.
As of now, no extension has been activated or new terms agreed upon, leaving Varane free to negotiate with other clubs this summer. While the decision is not imminent, speculation persists about a potential move in 2024.
Interestingly, Saudi sources maintain interest in Varane, with dealmakers from the region considering a high probability of securing his services in 2024. Despite some close to Varane downplaying this possibility, recruitment heads from Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr express confidence in acquiring the Frenchman.
It’s worth noting that Al-Ittihad, the reigning champions, were linked to Varane last summer, but the player was not inclined to move to the Middle East at that time.
A January move seems unlikely, given that most Saudi clubs have already met their foreign player quotas and depleted budgets during the extravagant spending spree in the previous summer window, which saw the arrivals of Neymar, N’Golo Kante, Sadio Mane, and Fabinho to the Pro League.
