- Stoke City’s manager, Alex Neil, faced dismissal after the team’s recent setback, a 1-0 loss to Sheffield. The Championship club, currently in 20th place, only two points above the relegation zone, has struggled with six victories in 20 league matches despite a significant summer overhaul involving 18 players.
The decision to part ways with Neil came immediately after the defeat to Sheffield, prompting the appointment of interim manager Paul Gallagher, with support from former Stoke player Ryan Shawcross and Alex Morris for the upcoming match against Swansea.
Chairman John Coates acknowledged Neil’s integrity and contributions to the club while emphasizing the need for immediate changes. Despite expressing gratitude for Neil’s efforts in assembling a confident group of players, Coates highlighted the necessity of a new direction given the team’s current performance.
Coates stated on the club’s website, “The success of our club is above all else in my life, and we are currently in the process of selecting Alex’s successor.”
Stoke City, which competed in the Premier League for ten seasons from 2008 to 2018 under Tony Pulis and Mark Hughes, faces challenges in reclaiming a spot in the top tier. Pulis’s tenure marked the team as one of the most formidable during their Premier League stint, renowned for a playing style that frustrated opponents. However, since their relegation, Stoke City has struggled to secure a promotion back to the Premier League.
In light of these challenges, the club is now focused on charting a new course, with Coates underlining the urgency of selecting Neil’s successor to guide the team towards success in the ongoing season.
