Arne Slot was visibly emotional after a key Liverpool player, set to be instrumental against Southampton, sustained an injury during yesterday’s international break.

Liverpool supporters are well aware of Virgil van Dijk’s immense value to their team, so news of his early return from international duty has naturally sparked concern. The Netherlands national team confirmed the development via a post on X, stating:

*”Virgil van Dijk and Frenkie de Jong are not part of the squad for our final group stage game against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Nations League. Ronald Koeman: ‘For both Frenkie and Virgil, it is better for them to leave the training camp at this moment. This decision was made on medical grounds, prioritizing the players’ well-being.’”*

It remains unclear whether Van Dijk’s withdrawal is due to an injury or simply a precautionary measure to give him some rest. However, the fact that both Van Dijk and De Jong were released from the squad simultaneously hints that the issue may not be too serious. Their early departures could be a strategic decision aimed at ensuring they are fully fit for upcoming club commitments.

Some fans may wonder why other prominent Dutch players, such as Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, have not been granted similar leave. However, with the Netherlands unable to top their Nations League group, it makes sense to prioritize the well-being of their key figures, particularly the captain, rather than risk them in what is effectively a dead-rubber match.

For Liverpool, the timing of Van Dijk’s return could be a blessing in disguise. Manager Arne Slot will likely welcome the opportunity for his defensive talisman to recuperate before resuming domestic duties. Van Dijk’s early return aligns with Liverpool’s wider approach during this international break, as other key players have also been kept out of action. Mohamed Salah, for instance, opted out of international duty to focus on his fitness, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is currently recovering from injury. This means several of Liverpool’s crucial players will come back refreshed, potentially giving the team a performance boost in the busy weeks ahead.

Liverpool’s current standing at the top of the Premier League table underscores the importance of maintaining their momentum. Ensuring that players like Van Dijk, Salah, and Alexander-Arnold are rested and fully fit will be critical as the season progresses. If this period of rest helps Liverpool’s stars remain in peak condition, it could play a significant role in their pursuit of silverware this season.
