Bernd Leno reveals the Manchester United star who tormented him throughout Fulham defeat

Old Trafford shed its usual aura of magic and became a punishing arena for Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno as Manchester United scraped a pulsating 3–2 victory. Although Benjamin Šeško’s last-gasp winner in the 94th minute grabbed the spotlight, it was Matheus Cunha who truly haunted Leno throughout the night. When the final whistle sounded, the German admitted he was left both mentally exhausted and physically worn down by the Brazilian forward’s ceaseless menace.

Handed a starting role following Patrick Dorgu’s injury, Cunha seized his chance with a performance overflowing with energy, movement and intent. From the first whistle, he set the tone by pressing aggressively, demanding possession and constantly probing Fulham’s defensive line. Every time United surged forward, Cunha was at the heart of it, forcing Leno into a state of constant alert. His standout moment arrived in the 56th minute, when he rifled a thunderous effort into the roof of the net, a strike that perfectly captured the confidence and ferocity of his display.

After the match, Leno spoke openly about the challenge of dealing with Cunha. He revealed that the forward’s presence made it impossible to relax, as each involvement felt like the start of another dangerous situation. Leno highlighted Cunha’s unpredictability as his most troubling trait, explaining that the Brazilian could just as easily shoot from range, slip in a teammate or bulldoze his way through defenders without any clear warning. Despite facing many elite attackers during his career, the Fulham goalkeeper stressed that Cunha’s relentless energy set him apart.

Cunha’s impact extended well beyond his goal. He played a key role in several pivotal moments, including a controversial VAR intervention that downgraded a penalty to a free-kick. Rather than dampen his spirit, the decision appeared to fuel his determination, driving him to push even harder. His combinations with Casemiro, in particular, gave United a sharpness and control that Fulham struggled to suppress for long spells.

At the end of the contest, the respect between adversaries was evident as Leno and Cunha exchanged shirts, a silent recognition of a fierce duel finally concluded. For United, the win represented a third straight success under Michael Carrick and propelled them into the top four. Cunha’s all-action display embodied a team rediscovering confidence, cohesion and an unmistakable edge.
