Lisandro Martínez’s latest injury represents a devastating blow for both the player and Manchester United. The club has confirmed that the Argentine defender suffered a cruciate ligament injury during their 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, which will rule him out for the remainder of the season and potentially well into the next. Martínez had to be stretchered off in the 82nd minute after receiving treatment on the pitch, and while the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, the seriousness of a cruciate ligament injury means a lengthy rehabilitation period is all but certain.
In a statement released by the club, United said: “Manchester United can confirm that Lisandro Martínez suffered an injury to his cruciate ligament in Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace. Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the appropriate course of treatment and the timescale for his rehabilitation. Everyone at Manchester United wishes Lisandro Martínez strength for a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.”
This setback is particularly cruel for Martínez, who has struggled with injuries all season. Almost exactly a year ago, he sustained medial collateral ligament damage in a match against West Ham. After returning for a brief appearance in the draw against Brentford, he was again sidelined, this time with a calf issue that kept him out for another six weeks. Just as he seemed to be regaining fitness, this new and far more serious injury has halted his progress once more.
United’s head coach Rúben Amorim acknowledged the gravity of the situation, saying, “He’s going to be out for a while. We don’t know the extent of the injury but it’s going to take time.” Amorim also addressed concerns about Luke Shaw, indicating the left-back is managing a minor issue in a different area from his previous injury, which adds to United’s growing defensive concerns.
Amorim accepted that he may face criticism, particularly for not reinforcing the squad during the winter transfer window. He noted that taking over mid-season and attempting to implement changes without new signings is a significant risk. “That is clear, is also exciting,” he said. “I knew when I chose this profession that you have the risk of results… My decision changing everything in the middle of the season without new signings is a danger for a coach.”
Given the situation, United may now be forced to prioritize the signing of a new centre-back in the summer. Players like Matthijs de Ligt or Jarrad Branthwaite could become key targets to help fill the void left by Martínez’s absence.
