According to recent reports, Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes narrowly dodged a red card during the FA Cup clash against Liverpool, with Lee Dixon shedding light on the incident. Despite Fernandes being cautioned earlier in the game, he managed to evade a second yellow card for a challenge on Dominik Szoboszlai in the second half. Dixon, offering co-commentary during the match, shared his perspective on why Fernandes escaped further punishment.
Dixon acknowledged that while Fernandes was fortunate not to receive another yellow card, he didn’t deem the challenge worthy of a straight red. He emphasized that such incidents are not uncommon on the field and, although they may undergo scrutiny from VAR, in this instance, VAR did not intervene. Dixon further elaborated that if a similar tackle occurred elsewhere on the pitch and Fernandes hadn’t already been booked, it would likely have resulted in a yellow card.
Expanding on his analysis, Dixon suggested that if the tackle had taken place on the halfway line, the referee would have indeed issued a yellow card. He stressed that while Fernandes’ challenge might have warranted review by VAR, it ultimately didn’t meet the criteria for a straight red card.
