BREAKING: PGMOL to grant Arsenal 3 points after dramatic VAR decision reversal at Stamford Bridge – congratulations to Arsenal fans

The Premier League has explained why Kai Havertz’s first-half goal for Arsenal against Chelsea was disallowed during their high-stakes match. Havertz, playing against his former club, thought he had broken the deadlock after Declan Rice quickly took a free kick, sending him through on goal. Havertz calmly finished past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez into the corner of the net, prompting initial celebrations. Referee Anthony Taylor awarded the goal on the field.

Havertz celebrated emphatically, gesturing to silence Chelsea fans by putting a finger to his lips. However, the joy was short-lived as VAR reviewed the goal. The analysis showed that Havertz was marginally offside, having moved ahead of Chelsea defender Levi Colwill at the moment Rice delivered the pass. Following this review, the goal was overturned.

The Premier League’s Match Centre, an initiative launched this season by PGMOL chief Howard Webb to enhance transparency, later clarified the decision. Through their Twitter account, they stated: “Havertz’s goal was initially awarded on-field. VAR checked and confirmed that Havertz was in an offside position and recommended the goal be disallowed.” This initiative aims to provide explanations for major VAR decisions to help fans better understand the officiating process.

Arsenal entered the match under pressure to reverse their recent poor run of results. In their midweek Champions League match, they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Inter Milan. That result followed a 1-0 loss to Newcastle United in the Premier League. The Gunners had not secured a league victory since October 5, when they defeated Southampton 3-1. Since that win, their performances had dipped, with a 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth and a 2-2 draw with Liverpool halting their progress.

Despite their struggles, Arsenal remained in the hunt for the top spot, particularly with Manchester City faltering. City suffered their fourth consecutive defeat on Saturday, losing 2-1 to Brighton. Meanwhile, Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the table by five points after defeating Aston Villa 2-0. Jurgen Klopp’s team has been the most consistent among the Big Six this season, while their rivals have grappled with injuries and erratic form.

Ahead of the Chelsea clash, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta received a significant boost as key players Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard returned to the squad. Rice, despite nursing a broken toe, was fit to play, while Ødegaard, sidelined with an ankle injury since August, also made a comeback. These returns bolstered Arsenal’s hopes of reigniting their league campaign.
