Bruno Fernandes’ Signature Antics Resurface in Throwback Clip of Ruben Amorim’s Referee Outburst

Social media has once again found a gem to laugh about, and this time the spotlight is on Manchester United’s manager Ruben Amorim. A resurfaced throwback video from his playing days has gone viral, and fans can’t get enough of the uncanny resemblance between Amorim’s behavior on the pitch and the antics of his current captain, Bruno Fernandes.

In the clip, Amorim is seen furiously disputing a decision with a referee, his arms flailing and his face full of exaggerated frustration. At first glance, it seems like any normal argument from a footballer in a heated match. But United supporters instantly noticed the similarity to Bruno’s now-iconic touchline protests at Old Trafford. From the frantic gestures to the dramatic looks of disbelief, Amorim looked almost identical to the player he now manages.

For years, Fernandes has been a divisive character in the Premier League. He is celebrated for his goals, assists, and creativity, but just as often criticized for his constant running commentary with referees. His animated gestures and endless protests have made him a lightning rod of debate among pundits and fans alike. Now, thanks to the old footage, many are joking that Bruno may have inherited his style directly from Amorim.

Supporters quickly took to X to make the connection. Memes circulated within hours, with one fan quipping that Fernandes graduated from the “Ruben Amorim School of Complaints,” while another suggested he had earned a doctorate in “referee negotiations.” Comparisons between Amorim’s old footage and Bruno’s modern-day protests only fueled the laughter, making it impossible to ignore the likeness.

Some found the irony amusing: Amorim, who now finds himself in charge of calming his captain down during fiery moments, was once equally guilty of the same behavior. As one fan hilariously remarked, “How can Amorim tell Bruno to relax when he was just as bad? That’s the definition of pot calling kettle black.”

Others pointed to a possible cultural trait, joking that Portugal not only exports incredible playmakers like Ronaldo and Fernandes but also produces specialists in debating with referees. Emotional appeals, theatrical expressions, and relentless complaints have long been a part of the nation’s footballing identity.

For Manchester United fans, the viral video provided some comic relief during what has been a turbulent start under Amorim’s leadership. Rather than focusing on recent struggles, supporters enjoyed seeing their manager and captain through a lighter lens. As one supporter put it, “Forget transfers — this is United’s true DNA: fire, passion, and refusing to back down, even to the officials.”

The resurfaced clip also gives new insight into the bond between Amorim and Bruno. Both are driven, emotional, and competitive to the core. Critics often accuse Fernandes of being excessive, but his intensity is also a major part of his leadership. Having once been the same type of player, Amorim might be the ideal manager to understand — and even harness — that fire.

Referees, however, may not see the humor. With Bruno orchestrating complaints on the pitch and Amorim voicing his frustrations from the sidelines, officials might be bracing for a double dose of protest this season. Some fans joked that referees will need “two pairs of eyes” whenever United take the field.

What began as a simple old video has turned into a reminder that Amorim and Fernandes are cut from the same cloth. Whether their shared passion becomes a problem or a source of strength, one thing is certain: Manchester United’s Portuguese duo are united in spirit — and referees across England may need extra patience to deal with them.
