Chelsea has just signed a 23-year-old star who scored more goals than Lionel Messi last season.

Tosin Adarabioyo, a 26-year-old defender currently playing for Fulham, has secured a move to Chelsea on a free transfer. His contract with Chelsea spans four years. With his current Fulham contract expiring at the end of the month, Adarabioyo is making this move to Chelsea partly to seize the opportunity to play in Europe, as Chelsea has qualified for the Europa Conference League for the upcoming season.

Adarabioyo, who started his professional career at Manchester City, had declined an offer earlier in the year to become one of the highest-paid players at Fulham. Reflecting on his new move, Adarabioyo expressed a sense of coming full circle by joining Chelsea, which he described as a significant club. He recalled making his professional debut at Stamford Bridge, adding a personal connection to his transfer. “I’m thrilled to be able to contribute to steering the club in the direction we desire,” he remarked.

Chelsea has also made other strategic moves to strengthen their squad and coaching team. They have hired Bernardo Cueva from Brentford for £750,000 to head a newly established set-piece department. The hope is that Cueva’s expertise will enhance Chelsea’s performance in both attacking and defensive set-pieces. This initiative aligns with the club’s ambition to address weaknesses and optimize their strategies around corners and free kicks.

The arrival of Adarabioyo at Chelsea might prompt the departure of Trevoh Chalobah, a defender from Chelsea’s academy, who is reportedly on the market this summer. Manchester United has shown interest in Chalobah, and his transfer might be expedited with Adarabioyo joining the squad. Additionally, Thiago Silva, Chelsea’s veteran defender, is set to leave the club to return to his former Brazilian team, Fluminense.

Nizaar Kinsella, a football correspondent for BBC Sport, provided insights into the transfer saga, noting the intense competition Chelsea faced to secure Adarabioyo’s signature. Despite a last-minute offer from Manchester United, Adarabioyo remained committed to Chelsea, honoring his initial agreement. This decision came after Chelsea managed to intercept negotiations between Adarabioyo and Newcastle, who had been in talks with the defender for a month. Atletico Madrid had also shown interest but couldn’t match the offers from Premier League clubs.

Adarabioyo’s decision to join Chelsea was influenced by his belief in the club’s vision, the chance to work with the new manager Enzo Maresca, with whom he had a brief stint at Manchester City, and the promise of a significant role in the team. Chelsea’s qualification for European competition also played a crucial role in his choice, giving them an edge over Newcastle.

Chelsea aims to utilize Adarabioyo’s impressive height of 6 feet 5 inches to strengthen their set-piece tactics. His physical presence is expected to be a valuable asset in both attacking and defending set-pieces. With Thiago Silva’s departure, Adarabioyo’s skills on the ball are seen as a vital addition to Chelsea’s defense, helping to fill the void left by the experienced Brazilian defender. The club is also banking on Bernardo Cueva’s expertise to revamp their set-piece strategies, as part of their broader efforts to improve their overall performance and stabilize their finances.
