De Bruyne, Haaland, and Doku Face Disheartening Outcome as They Miss Out on FIFA Club World Cup Medals.

In an unexpected twist, the chances of Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, and Jeremy Doku securing a medal, despite Manchester City potentially winning the FIFA Club World Cup, have taken a hit. Initially included in the first 23-man squad by Pep Guardiola, even amid their ongoing injury recoveries, the trio faced the prospect of receiving medals if they contributed to a victorious campaign.

However, for the crucial final clash against Fluminense, Guardiola opted for a change, substituting Haaland, De Bruyne, and Doku with Micah Hamilton, Max Alleyne, and Mahamadou Susoho. The revised squad, limited to 23 players eligible for medals, leaves Haaland, Doku, and De Bruyne on the sidelines when it comes to this coveted recognition.

FIFA regulations stipulate that only those involved in the semi-final can partake in the final, cementing the line-up that triumphed over Urawa Red Diamonds. The consequence is that the trio misses out on the opportunity to secure medals, as only the final 23 are eligible for this honor.

Although FIFA typically awards 23 medals, some coaches have previously advocated for additional medals to acknowledge the broader contributions of the squad. Notably, in 2022, Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp appealed to the Football Association for extra awards following their FA Cup victory over Chelsea, showcasing a precedent for such requests.

As the situation unfolds, the outcome remains uncertain regarding whether FIFA will adopt a similar approach and permit more medals for Manchester City. The desire to recognize the collective effort of the entire squad suggests that an appeal for additional medals might be on the horizon, echoing past instances in football where acknowledgment of the entire team’s contribution becomes a priority.
