Leicester City has terminated the contract of manager Willie Kirk after an investigation into allegations of a relationship with a player, as reported by The Daily Mail. Kirk, a 45-year-old Scotsman, was suspended earlier this month pending an inquiry.
Following an internal disciplinary process, the club found Kirk to be in breach of their code of conduct, leading to his dismissal after a two-year tenure with the club.
In their statement following Kirk’s termination, Leicester City reiterated their dedication to professionalism and a performance-oriented environment, emphasizing that Kirk’s actions compromised his position and violated the team’s code of conduct established at the beginning of the current season.
Willie Kirk initially joined Leicester City in July 2022 as the director of football before taking on the role of manager in November. Under his leadership, the team currently holds the ninth position in the Women’s Super League, but has recently suffered defeats against Tottenham and Brighton. Nonetheless, they are scheduled to compete in the FA Cup semi-finals against Spurs in mid-April.
Following Kirk’s departure, his assistant Jennifer Foster and first-team coach Stephen Kirby will oversee the team temporarily until a replacement is appointed.
This incident contributes to a concerning trend in women’s football, highlighted by Sheffield United’s Jonathan Morgan’s dismissal last month for a similar alleged relationship with a player. These cases underscore the critical importance of maintaining professional boundaries within the sport and enforcing strict codes of conduct to preserve the integrity and reputation of women’s football.
