Gareth Southgate has expressed his admiration for a Manchester City player’s exceptional abilities. As the England national team manager, Southgate has witnessed many top-tier talents and watched numerous Premier League games. This season, he has particularly praised Phil Foden for his remarkable performances on the pitch.

During a recent Football Writers’ Association award ceremony, Southgate reminisced about his initial encounter with Foden. He recalled an Under-16 camp at St. George’s Park, where Foden’s talent was evident. Southgate shared, “When you have a unique player, it creates a ripple effect. Everyone was saying, ‘Have you seen Phil?’ The fluidity, turns, and gliding motions he had then are exactly the same now. And then they told me he was only 14!”

Southgate emphasized that Foden’s continuous development is significantly influenced by his daily interactions with exceptional teammates, Pep Guardiola’s guidance, and a fantastic coaching staff. He noted that this environment has maintained Foden’s enthusiasm for the game. “Phil is a huge football fan. He loves playing with the ball. Usually, we have to drag Jack Grealish off the training field! Phil is a unique player. He will be a household name for many years to come. Having him is a blessing.”

This season, Foden’s performance has been stellar, with 25 goals and 11 assists in 51 games across all competitions. This marks a significant improvement from his previous season, where he had 13 goal contributions in 48 games. Foden’s outstanding form has earned him the FWA Men’s Player of the Year award and nominations for both the Premier League and Manchester City’s Player of the Season awards.

Under Southgate’s management, Foden has made 33 appearances for the England national team, contributing eight assists and four goals. His consistent performance makes him a strong candidate for the squad for this summer’s European Championship in Germany.

Southgate’s high praise for Foden highlights the young player’s growth and potential. From his early days at the Under-16 camp, where his talent was immediately recognized, to his current status as a key player for both Manchester City and the England national team, Foden’s journey has been impressive. The support from Guardiola and the coaching staff at Manchester City has been crucial in honing his skills and keeping his passion for the game alive.

Foden’s love for football and his dedication to improving his game have been evident throughout his career. Southgate’s remarks underscore the unique qualities that set Foden apart from his peers. His ability to maintain the same level of fluidity and creativity that he showed at a young age is a testament to his natural talent and hard work.
