Ex-Chelsea player and manager Frank Lampard named as manager of surprising Premier League team

A recent report suggests that Frank Lampard is unexpectedly being considered for the role of head coach for the Canada national team. The Canadian Football Federation purportedly included Lampard on a management shortlist ahead of co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and the United States, as per The Telegraph.

Lampard, who endured a brief and unsuccessful stint as Chelsea’s temporary manager at the conclusion of the previous season, has been without a coaching position since then. The former England international, aged 45, reportedly expressed eagerness to return to management given the right opportunity, and Canada is said to be interested in discussing the possibility with him. However, it remains uncertain if Lampard would find the position in Canada appealing.

Following John Herdman’s departure from the role last summer to join Toronto FC, Mauro Biello has been serving as Canada’s interim manager. Although Lampard spent a year in the United States with New York City FC towards the end of his playing career, he has never held a managerial position abroad.

The potential appointment of Lampard as head coach of the Canada national team is generating intrigue and speculation within the football community. His experience as both a player and a manager, albeit limited, could offer a fresh perspective and inject new energy into the Canadian squad.

Should Lampard accept the role, it would mark a significant step in his coaching career, particularly given the opportunity to lead a national team on the international stage. However, uncertainties linger regarding his readiness for such a role, especially considering his lack of experience managing a team outside of his native England.

Nonetheless, Lampard’s name being linked with the Canada national team highlights the growing interest and investment in football across North America, particularly with the upcoming World Cup co-hosted by the region. It underscores the ambition of Canadian football authorities to elevate the status of their national team and compete on a global scale.

Ultimately, whether Lampard takes on the challenge of coaching Canada remains to be seen. It will depend on various factors, including the terms of the offer, his personal aspirations, and his assessment of the team’s potential. Nonetheless, the prospect of Lampard guiding the Canadian squad adds an intriguing subplot to the evolving landscape of international football.
