“The referee saw the foul on Gakpo and indicated advantage… Nunez shot wide,” Mellor posted. “Contact was inside the area… so why didn’t VAR tell him it should be a penalty?” Although the decision did not affect the overall outcome of the game, it reignited debates among fans about the inconsistent application of VAR and the standards of refereeing in the Premier League.
This incident was not the only contentious VAR moment over the weekend. On Saturday, Arsenal supporters were left furious when Declan Rice was handed a second yellow card for time-wasting by kicking the ball away. In contrast, Brighton’s Joao Pedro was not penalized for a similar act, highlighting perceived inconsistencies in disciplinary decisions.
