FIFA imposes a severe ban on Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes after his second straight dismissal for dangerous play and misconduct.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been shown a red card for the second time within five days, following his recent dismissal in two different competitions. The Portuguese midfielder first received a red card during United’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Just a few days later, Fernandes was sent off again, this time during Manchester United’s Europa League fixture against Porto, which ended in a 3-3 draw.

In the Europa League clash, Fernandes was sent off in the 82nd minute after receiving a second yellow card for a dangerous high-foot challenge. Earlier in the match, he had already been booked for a similar offense, involving another high-footed challenge. The second incident occurred when Fernandes tried to make contact with a cross, but Porto defender Nehuen Perez lowered his head to clear the ball. As Fernandes stretched for the ball, Perez went down, clutching his face, prompting the referee to act decisively. Though it seemed Fernandes’ focus was on the ball, his raised foot was deemed dangerous.

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson provided commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live, analyzing the controversial red card. According to Robinson, Fernandes was visibly frustrated with the decision but acknowledged the challenge’s potential danger. He noted that while Fernandes appeared to have his eyes fixed on the ball, the high position of his foot made it an unsafe play. Robinson emphasized that given the nature of the challenge, the referee was left with little choice but to send Fernandes off the pitch. The decision likely followed the strict guidelines around dangerous play, particularly when a player raises their foot to a height that could endanger an opponent’s safety.

This latest red card adds to what has been a turbulent period for Fernandes and Manchester United. The captain, typically a central figure in the team’s play, now faces the prospect of missing further games, both domestically and in European competition, due to suspension. His absence may significantly impact United’s plans, especially given the already challenging start to the season for the club.

The incident highlights the fine line players must walk between being aggressive in their challenges and ensuring they do not put their opponents at risk. Fernandes, known for his competitive nature, found himself at the center of two contentious moments within a matter of days, both of which led to his dismissal from the field.
