A dramatic late-game decision to overturn a penalty overshadowed an intense Premier League encounter between Everton and Manchester United at Goodison Park. Despite dominating for large portions of the match, Everton had to settle for a 2-2 draw as Manchester United mounted a stunning comeback in the closing stages.

Everton asserted their authority early on and opened the scoring in the 19th minute through Beto, who showcased his sharp finishing ability. The Portuguese striker, continuing his fine run of form, netted his fifth goal in four league appearances to put the hosts ahead. The Toffees maintained their high intensity and extended their advantage just 11 minutes later. Jack Harrison’s powerful shot forced a save from United goalkeeper Andre Onana, but the rebound fell perfectly for Abdoulaye Doucoure, who headed the ball into an empty net to make it 2-0.

Sean Dyche’s men continued to control proceedings, keeping Manchester United at bay for the remainder of the first half and well into the second period. United struggled to create any meaningful chances, and it wasn’t until the 70th minute that they registered their first shot on target. However, that attempt proved decisive, as Bruno Fernandes produced a moment of quality to halve the deficit. The United captain curled a well-placed free-kick into the bottom right corner, giving his side renewed hope.

The visitors, buoyed by Fernandes’ goal, pressed forward with greater urgency, and their persistence paid off just eight minutes later. Manuel Ugarte, capitalizing on the momentum shift, found the back of the net to bring Manchester United level at 2-2. With the game hanging in the balance, Everton tried to regain control, pushing for a late winner.

Deep into stoppage time, the hosts thought they had been handed the perfect opportunity to snatch all three points when the referee pointed to the penalty spot following a challenge on Ashley Young. However, after a VAR review, Andy Madley was instructed to check the pitch-side monitor. Despite replays showing Matthijs de Ligt appearing to tug Young’s shirt, the referee controversially decided to overturn his initial decision, denying Everton the chance to take the lead from the spot.

The final whistle blew shortly after, sealing a 2-2 draw. The dramatic turn of events left Everton feeling hard done by, while Manchester United breathed a sigh of relief. Although the Toffees had dominated large portions of the contest, they ultimately had to settle for a single point, while United’s late surge ensured they escaped with a share of the spoils.
