“I deeply regret joining Arsenal; it was Mikel Arteta’s influence that compelled me, and I wish I had never departed from my previous club.”

Former Arsenal player Willian recently expressed regret over his decision to join the club in 2020, highlighting that he wished he had stayed with his former club, Chelsea. The Brazilian winger, who was one of Mikel Arteta’s initial signings, had a challenging stint at Arsenal, managing only one goal in 25 Premier League appearances and facing criticism from fans.

Reflecting on his time at Arsenal, Willian admitted in an interview with Sky Sports that he wished he had never left Chelsea. Despite his initial excitement and motivation, he found it difficult to adapt to the changes happening at Arsenal. The following season, Willian sought to revive his form by signing with Corinthians before eventually finding success at Fulham.

During a separate interview on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Willian disclosed that he had contemplated leaving Arsenal just three months after joining. Unhappiness and a lack of motivation were key factors affecting his performance. Despite the significant financial sacrifice, Willian prioritized his happiness over monetary gains, emphasizing the importance of finding joy in daily activities, including training.

In retrospect, Willian acknowledged the historic significance of Arsenal as a club but expressed that the timing of his arrival might have contributed to the challenges he faced. He noted the club’s positive trajectory after his departure, stating that he joined during a period of significant change.

Currently enjoying his time at Fulham, Willian emphasized the importance of happiness and pleasure in his career decisions. The experience at Arsenal, marked by difficulties and a sense of unfairness, led him to prioritize personal well-being over financial considerations. Overall, Willian’s journey reflects the complex dynamics players navigate in the football world, where success and happiness don’t always align with monetary gains.
